Plus: Canoe carving, Diddy indictment, and harm reduction

Hey there. Have you ever wondered why YVR is called YVR—or why all the major Canadian airports are Y-something-something?

Canoe Cultures carves a community

An Indigenous carver demonstrates the skill to an Indigenous youth.

Canoe Cultures was founded to pass carving knowledge onto Indigenous youth. Since it started in 2019, dozens of young people have learned important skills. “We’ve taught many paddlers and many canoe builders—maybe over 50,” says Mike Billy Sr., a skwxwu7mesh carver. Now, the organization is preparing to host the Four Fires Festival canoe races next week in False Creek.

Go Behind the Scenes of Longlegs and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga at VIFF 2024

The Vancouver International Film Festival returns from September 26 - October 6.

The festival's opening weekend includes conversations with two experts celebrated for some of 2024’s most thrilling titles.

Even before its release, Osgood Perkins’ Longlegs had become the stuff of legend, anointed by tastemakers as “nightmare fuel” of the highest order, and crowned the most successful independent film of 2024.

In Methods to Madness on Saturday September 28, the film's writer-director delves into the dark secrets of the film's success.

Academy Award winning production designer Colin Gibson has been the architect of the end of the world. As George Miller’s go-to guy for two decades, he’s credited for creating the look and feel of Mad Max: Fury Road and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

In Making it Epic on Sunday September 29, Gibson will join VIFF to reveal his role in creating these unforgettable worlds.
