North America's 50 Best Restaurants list dropped late last week, and with it comes a fresh wave of acclaim for British Columbia's fine dining scene. Artopia is turning empty buildings into creative spaces

David Duprey is a familiar face when it comes to using Vancouver's spaces in unconventional ways. His latest project, Artopia, is a formal recognition of that: an organized umbrella for his network of 10 buildings that have so far given artists 170,000 square feet of studio space. “There are so many empty buildings out there all over the place,” Duprey tells us. “There are tens of thousands of square feet of empty buildings that I would love to activate.”

Beatdapp’s third annual Battle of the Bands is designed to get more people listening to local artists through some good ol’ fashioned competition. “It’s such a collaborative thing, because everybody’s part of it and it’s happening in real time,” enthuses Beatdapp marketing and events manager Niamh MacGinty. “The energy builds and builds until the end of the night.”
