Heyo, this is your friendly neighbourhood editor-in-chief Nathan subbing in here while V is off this week.

With our last print issue (in boxes now!), I may have been trying to get the entire rest of the city on board with the soccer fever I’ve personally been experiencing, but come on, did anyone catch the Whitecaps game last night? Thomas Müller off the post and in from a set piece?? Just awesome. The ‘Caps are tops in the Western Conference right now and heading into a tough home matchup against second-place Houston on Wednesday. I will be tuning in, you?

Don’t worry, no more sports content for the rest of the newsletter. I can’t promise I won’t be talking ‘Caps on Thursday though.

It looks like ABC candidates won’t be attending debates

Prior to last year’s municipal by-election to fill two city council vacancies, ruling party ABC Vancouver did not send its two candidates to all-candidates meetings or debates. Those candidates got absolutely smoked. Now it looks like the party might do the same for October’s general election. Is that a glaring mistake?

Our journalism is only possible because of Straight Insiders.

In a time when technology is taking jobs, the Straight remains what it has always been: a small team of scrappy journalists, doing our best to cover the stories that matter to the city we all love.

For just $8.25 per month—the cost of one fancy latte—you can help support the 60-year legacy of the Georgia Straight. In exchange for your hard-earned money, we've got a huge range of deals, discounts, and free tickets up for grabs—but only for Insiders.

Right now that includes free tickets for Amy Miller's Vancouver is Funny show; free tickets to Come From Away at the Arts Club; discounts on drinks at Prophecy and Riley's; special deals at Minami and Pourhouse; and much more besides.

Photos: AC/DC show little wear and tear at BC Place

Audience members were thunderstruck last week as AC/DC took the stage at BC Place, perhaps for the last time. By all accounts the oldies are still golden, with guitarist Angus Young in particular turning back the clock to deliver a stunning performance.

The Broadway Subway isn’t finished, but Fable Diner is

Sadly, Fable Diner on Broadway will close its doors on August 23. The restaurant’s owner, Ron MacGillivray, had been vocal about trying to keep it open even through some very difficult times brought on by the construction of the Broadway Subway Project. Despite believing the corner will eventually become an exceptional location once the subway opens and development accelerates along Broadway, MacGillivray said prospective buyers weren't willing to take on the risk amid construction.
