August 13 edition: Little snip, big price

Plus: Peri peri perfection, latex love, and mixed-media meditations

Hey there.  August is slipping away… like a bottle of wine.

We might be less than halfway through the month, but to me that means it’s nearly Virgo season, nearly September, nearly fall, and nearly time to discover which of my sweaters survived a very mothy summer. Or not!

Summer is a state of mind, and there are still plenty of chances left to get sunburnt.

Vancouver’s vasectomy complexities

A stock photo of black chairs in a waiting room

For Ryan Serediuk, a 35-year-old father of two, getting a vasectomy made sense. “Kids are expensive. We don’t want an oopsie for a third one,” he explains. Serediuk got the procedure done at a private clinic—the situation that many local vasectomy-seekers find themselves in. Sandrine Jacquot dives into why so many people seeking long-term contraception have to pay for it in money—or time.

At Deadly Couture, latex is an art form

A tattooed femme models a black and red lingerie set with matching black gloves, all made of latex

Latex isn’t just for celebrities and superheroes and dominatrixes anymore: it’s for everyone. Nobody knows that better than MsPervology, the owner and founder of East Van’s Deadly Couture. In the 18 years her store has been running, she’s seen, done, and made it all—out of latex. “It’s like a second skin that can drape beautifully but also cling snugly,” the designer enthuses. “The colour possibilities are astounding and vibrant, and the way it shines and reflects is intoxicating.”

Jamie Bizness explores self-evolution in Growing is Forever

A wooden board painted with a rose, agaist a backdrop of dripping red paint

Jamie Bizness is known for his mix of neoclassical and street art, with two decades of exploring dark themes and twisted memories under his belt. So it’s a bit of a surprise that his latest exhibition, showing now at Fingerprint Gallery, is so pastoral and natural. “My art is about where your mind can go in nature,” Bizness explains. “I hope people feel relaxed at first, but that they also look deeper within themselves as they spend more time with the work.”
