April 29 2025: The Carney-val continues
Plus: A beloved bar slings its last shots
Hey there. How are you holding up?
It’s okay if the answer is badly. It’s not often your city becomes the centre of worldwide attention due to the kind of horrific violence we like to think couldn’t happen here—an attack on the Filipino community, on racialized people, on gathering and joy and public life itself. It’s not often you see events you live through get politicized by the worst kind of people looking to score cheap points. It’s not often your social media turns into a litany of loss and you have to do normal things like go to work or file your taxes or vote while the world’s been turned a little darker.
But we’re far from hopeless. From lighting candles and laying wreaths to donating to GoFundMes and giving so much blood that Canadian Blood Services has run out of local slots, Vancouver comes together.

From one Liberal minority government to another

Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won the lion’s share of seats in yesterday’s election, saving him from the ignominy of becoming Canada’s shortest-serving Prime Minister. The former banker might have had plenty to celebrate, but that wasn’t true of the NDP, which lost official party status thanks to a massive shift towards two-party voting. Nathan Caddell summarizes the Vancouver action.
